Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound is a medical test that is performed to check your muscles, tendons, nerves, joints, soft tissues, ligaments, and bursae throughout your body. The bursae are saclike cavities that are filled with liquid. These are located in the bony joint area where tendons and muscles move. MSK Ultrasound is also recommended for patients who are unable to take an MRI scan. This is a noninvasive test.
Why is Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound done?
Generally, the doctor may recommend you MSK Ultrasound for identifying the following problems.
- Muscle tears.
- Sprained ankle.
- Carpal tunnel syndrome (nerve entrapments).
- Ligament sprain or tears.
- Achilles tendon (ankle).
- Ganglion cysts.
- Foreign objects such as splinters, metal or glass in the soft tissues.
- Masses or fluid collections.
- Soft tissue tumors.
- Early changes in rheumatoid arthritis.
- Dislocation of the hip, neck muscle disorders in infants.
- Tissue lumps in children.

How do you prepare for a Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound?
- You will be asked to sit on an examination table in a position.
- As with other ultrasound, you should wear loose clothing.
- A gel is used in the area of investigation. A probe called a transducer is pressed which sends and collects sound waves to and from the area of study and the image is displayed on the computer screen.
- Sometime, when the scanning is to be performed on a region of tenderness, you might feel minor discomfort or pain.
- This procedure may take up to 15 – 30 minutes.
- Normal activities can be continued after the examination unless otherwise stated by the radiologist.
The doctor will analyze the image, and will further brief you if there are any defects or abnormalities. If there is any concern, further evaluation or imaging may be required. Follow-up with the doctor is very important in analyzing if the defect is unstable or has stabilized.
It is sometimes difficult to get a preferred image of the internal structure of some of the bony structures with ultrasound due to its low penetration ability. If that is the case, MRI or other imaging test is usually carried out.
